Article Icon 1Talarico Announces Senate Run

Democratic State Rep. James Talarico of Round Rockan aspiring minister and former teacher who was elected to the Texas House in 2018announced his candidacy for the U.S. Senate yesterday, promising to “bring people together and take power back for working Texans.”

Talarico’s profile has risen in the past year after an appearance on Joe Rogan’s podcast. He has vocally opposed legislation that established a new school choice program and required posting the Ten Commandments in public school classrooms.

Talarico, 36, joins former U.S. Rep. Colin Allred and retired NASA astronaut Terry Virts in seeking the Democratic nomination. Four-term incumbent John Cornyn and Attorney General Ken Paxton are in a tight race for the Republican nod.

This is an underdog fight. We’re going up against the political establishment, and we’re going up against a lot of money. Big Money is powerful, but it’s nothing compared to people power,” Talarico said.

A Texas A&M dean and department head have been removed from their positions after State Rep. Brian Harrison (R-Midlothian) shared videos of a confrontation between a student and a professor of children’s literature this summer regarding instruction related to gender identity.

In the video, the unnamed female student asks Dr. Melissa McCoul if it’s legal to teach about gender identity in light of President Donald Trump’s executive order denying federal funds to institutions that “promote gender ideology.” The professor insists her teaching is not illegal and asks the student to leave.

Harrison also shared audio recordings of a conversation the student had with President Welsh, who insisted he would not fire McCoul but acknowledged course descriptions should accurately reflect the subject matter. Other social media posts provided copies of course materials, including an infographic called the “Gender Unicorn.”

In a statement, Texas A&M University System Chancellor Glenn Hegar said, “It is unacceptable for A&M System faculty to push a personal political agenda.” Harmeet Dhillon, the Justice Department’s assistant attorney general for civil rights, called the incident “deeply concerning” and promised an investigation.

Article Icon 1NYT Recognizes Four Texas Restaurants

Texas landed four restaurants on the annual New York Times list of the country’s 50 best restaurants, which was released Monday.

Isidore, which opened last year in San Antonio’s Pullman Market, was praised for its “wild and unfettered” selection of Texas fare, including mesquite beans, wagyu steak, and yuba with cream.

James Beard nominee Ope Amosu earned recognition for his West African bowl concept ChòpnBlọk in Houston. “In a world of sad salads shoveled out of cardboard, ChopnBlok is a delightful antidote to the slop bowl era,” wrote food critic Priya Krishna.

In Austin, Lao’d Bar was celebrated for its rib-eye lahb with crying tiger sauce, while P Thai’s Khao Man Gai & Noodles earned praise for its “distinct cuisine born of Chinese immigrants who moved to Thailand, adapting their dishes to the electric flavors of their new home.”
