Good Morning! On this day in 1904, surrealist artist Harry Peyton Carnohan was born in Milford. His most famous work is West Texas Landscape, depicting a farmhouse, a windmill, and a mesa.
A rescue cat that lives at a library in Fredericksburg isn’t welcome anymore, and some people aren’t happy about it. Check out the story in today’s Et Cetera section.

The Texas Senate passed a bill Wednesday to prohibit local governments from allocating taxpayer funds to groups that help women pay for out-of-state travel or other assistance to receive an abortion. Two Democrats voted with Republicans in approving the measure.
Senate Bill 33 aims to strengthen a 2019 law that bars direct payments for abortion-related travel. Cities like Austin and San Antonio have attempted to get around the prohibition by funding organizations that facilitate out-of-state travel.
The legislation is a priority of Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, who said it “draws a line in the sand, prohibiting these cities from using taxpayer dollars to fund abortion-related travel to circumvent state law.” The House must pass the bill before it can become law.
Yesterday, a group of Republicans in the Texas House succeeded in forcing leadership to withdraw a slate of memorial and congratulatory resolutions that included one honoring the late Cecile Richards, daughter of the former governor and the president of Planned Parenthood from 2006 to 2018.
Investigation Uncovers Cartel-Linked Crime Ring
An investigation into retail theft at Katy Mills Mall outside Houston led authorities to uncover a cartel-linked crime ring believed to have stolen over $100 million in merchandise nationwide.
Four men communicating through wireless earpieces were recorded stuffing $5,000 worth of Tommy Hilfiger and Guess merchandise into suitcases. When police followed them to a nearby Airbnb, they discovered additional stolen goods, Mexican IDs, and plane tickets.
One of the suspects was linked to a prior raid in Laredo, in which $2 million of stolen merchandise was discovered. According to court records, he allegedly shipped $200,000 of stolen merchandise from Minnesota to Laredo.
Authorities have identified at least 98 suspected cartel members connected to the operation, in which “boosters” travel city-to-city, committing large-scale retail theft, staying at each location for about a week at a time. No arrests have yet been announced.
Texas QB Projected No. 1 NFL Draft Pick
Cam Ward, the projected No. 1 pick in next week’s NFL draft, didn’t get any offers from major college programs after starting for two years at West Columbia High, a 4A school in a Brazoria County town of 3,644.
Despite having a strong arm and leading West Columbia to a district championship in 2019, Ward rarely threw more than 10 passes a game due to the Roughnecks’ run-heavy offense.
After Ward and his father drove to football camps across the state to showcase his skills, he accepted an offer to play for San Antonio’s University of the Incarnate Word, where he threw for 71 touchdowns and 14 interceptions.
Following two years starting for Washington State, he played a final season at the University of Miami, earning recognition as the nation’s top quarterback and finishing his college career with an NCAA-record 158 touchdowns.
