Article Icon 1Tragic Accident at Port Arthur LNG

Three workers died and two were injured when scaffolding collapsed at the Port Arthur LNG construction site in Sabine Pass early Tuesday morning.

Officials have not determined the cause of the collapse. Construction contractor Bechtel Global Corporation has suspended work at the site, and the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration is investigating the incident.

The Port Arthur LNG project, currently in phase 1 of construction, is a joint venture between Sempra Infrastructure and ConocoPhillips.

Article Icon 1Fairview LDS Temple Approved

The Fairview Town Council yesterday approved a revised plan proposed by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to build a temple with a 120-foot spire, ending a yearlong dispute that pitted religious freedom concerns against the community’s desire to retain its small-town character.

The decision came during a packed meeting after hours of public comment from 40 residents and church members. Opponents of the temple wore green, while supporters wore blue.

Mayor Henry Lessner, who voted to approve the temple, admitted it was “not what we wanted” but said a lawsuit would threaten the city’s resources. When completed, the church will be the town’s tallest building.

A church spokesperson said the new temple is needed to serve the region’s 100,000 members. “We believe we have the freedom in this country to practice how we believe,” said a member who attended the meeting. “This is what God wants.”

An 18-wheeler overturned on U.S. 287 in Wise County Tuesday morning, spilling $800,000 in freshly minted dimes and shutting down the highway for 14 hours as crews recovered the loose change.

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, the crash happened around 5:30 a.m. when the driver veered off the road and overcorrected. The driver and a passenger were transported to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Crews used shovels, vacuums, and their hands to pick up the coins from the road and nearby brush. It’s unclear why the truck was carrying millions of loose dimes.

Put an End to Those Pesky Spam Calls

There are few things more frustrating than dashing across the room to answer your ringing phone, only to see “Potential Spam” on the caller ID (probably for the third time today). If you want to cleanse your phone of this annoyance (and increase your personal security), you have three options:

1. Throw your phone into the ocean.

2. Individually block each unknown caller.
