Article Icon 1Gov. Greg Abbott Signs School Choice Bill

Gov. Greg Abbott signed Senate Bill 2 into law Saturday afternoon, launching a statewide school choice program that allows public funds to be used for private education, virtual learning, and homeschooling.

The program will be capped at $1 billion over the first two years, supporting approximately 100,000 students. Eligible students can receive up to $10,500 annually through education savings accounts (ESAs), while students with disabilities may receive an additional $30,000.

Homeschooling families will be eligible for up to $2,000, though the exact implementation details are still being finalized.

Senate Bill 2 passed the Texas Senate 19-12 and the House 86-61 after years of legislative resistance. The law takes effect Sept. 1, 2025. The program is set to launch in the 2026–27 school year.

Article Icon 1Starbase Becomes Official Texas City

Elon Musk’s SpaceX launch site in South Texas is now officially the City of Starbase following a Saturday vote by local residents, most of them SpaceX employees.

The incorporation passed 212 to six, and SpaceX employee Bobby Peden was elected mayor. Starbase, near the U.S.-Mexico border, is the hub for SpaceX’s Starship program, supporting NASA and Defense Department missions.

With city status, SpaceX aims to streamline operations and gain more control over closures of nearby Boca Chica Beach and State Park.

Critics argue the move hands too much power to Musk and reduces public oversight. Local environmental groups and county officials say beach access decisions should remain under county control.

Article Icon 1Texas Couple Guilty in $14M Medicare Scam

A Harlingen couple pleaded guilty to defrauding Medicare out of $14 million through their company, Southwest Medical Homepatient, which falsely billed for wheelchair parts and repairs never provided.

Jeremiah and Maria Luisa Yzaguirre admitted in federal court to submitting inflated claims—including claims totaling more than $736,000 for a single beneficiary—by alleging dozens of fictitious part replacements.

Investigators found the couple used the funds to buy cryptocurrency, luxury goods, and pop culture collectibles, including a prop from the 1986 film Short Circuit and high-end LEGO sets.

They will be sentenced on Aug. 4 and face up to 10 years in federal prison and $250,000 in fines.
