Article Icon 1Texas Oil Reserves Estimate Increased

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) recently announced that vast, previously undiscovered oil and natural gas reserves lie beneath East Texas and Louisiana.

The Hosston and Travis Peak formations contain an additional 28 million barrels of oil and nearly 36 trillion cubic feet of natural gas compared to previous estimates—enough to fuel the nation’s current rate of consumption for 14 months.

To date, the formations have produced 126 million barrels of oil and 8 trillion cubic feet of natural gas. The natural gas deposits, classified as “tight gas” trapped in dense rock at depths up to 10,000 feet, are accessible due to extraction techniques refined over the last few decades.

The shift to horizontal drilling with fracking has revolutionized oil production, and we’ve changed with it,” said USGS geologist Christopher Schenk. The USGS began looking for previously untapped resources 50 years ago during the Arab oil embargo.

The University of Texas at Austin has announced a $100 million investment to renovate a laboratory building to accommodate its new School of Civic Leadership, established in 2023.

The school can trace its origins to the Liberty Institute, created four years ago by conservative donors and Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick to combat the perceived influence of critical race theory in higher education.

We need to get back on the pathway of ensuring that we are educating our students with the leading concepts that have led to the great country we are,” said Gov. Greg Abbott during a Thursday ceremony to announce the development.

The college enrolled its first students last fall. In a few months, 100 freshmen majoring in civics honors will join the program. The renovation is scheduled to be completed in 2028.

Nine former Texas high school football players and coaches were inducted into the Texas High School Football Hall of Fame in Waco on Saturday. Among the honorees were Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, 2011 Heisman Trophy winner Robert Griffin III, and UTSA head coach Jeff Traylor.

Mahomes, 29, started two seasons at Whitehouse High School. As a senior, he threw for 4,619 yards and 50 touchdowns while rushing for 948 yards and 15 touchdowns. He went on to play for Texas Tech, leading the country in passing yards and total touchdowns.

Griffin, 35, played for Copperas Cove High School. During his two seasons as the starting quarterback, he led the Bulldawgs to consecutive state championship games, throwing for 3,357 yards and 41 touchdowns while rushing for 2,161 yards and 32 touchdowns. He then played four seasons for Baylor.

When I go around the league, all I brag about is Texas high school football. They don’t know how much it means,” said Mahomes.
