Article Icon 1San Antonio Hit with Deadly Flash Floods

Severe storms in and around San Antonio knocked out power to thousands and produced flash floods that killed at least five people early yesterday morning.

First responders received more than 65 calls for high water rescues as more than six inches of rain fell overnight. Over 30,000 CPS Energy customers lost power, and the city-owned utility said it could take more than 24 hours to restore all connections.

Local authorities closed dozens of roads, and portions of I-35 and I-10 were temporarily blocked off. A bridge was wiped out in northeast San Antonio. See videos.

Elsewhere in Texas, a tornado touched down briefly in Wimberley, and 10 people were rescued from flooding in Palo Pinto County.

Article Icon 1Over 100 Natural Gas Plants Proposed

According to a Wednesday report from the nonprofit Environmental Integrity Project, more than 100 new gas-fired power plants have been proposed in Texas to meet surging electricity demand from AI data centers.

Totaling 58 gigawatts of capacity, the proposals for 108 new and 17 expanded facilities include four projects currently under construction, 33 that have received permits, and 98 that are still in the early planning stages. More than 60 are tentatively scheduled for completion by the end of 2028.

Texas power grid operator ERCOT estimates the state’s peak electricity demand will double by 2030. Since 2023, legislators have allocated $10 billion in funding for new dispatchable power generation projects.

Critics of the proposed projects object to the approval process and the potential environmental impact, stating that the plants will produce 115 million metric tons of greenhouse gases annually, equivalent to emissions from 27 million cars.

Article Icon 1Legislature Passes Water Bills

The Texas Legislature approved several bills during this session to address the state’s critical water needs as its population booms and droughts continue. Notably, Corpus Christi could run out of water within the next two years.

Senate Bill 7 dedicates $1 billion a year for the next 20 years to new water supply projects, infrastructure repairs, and conservation programs. However, Texas voters must approve a constitutional amendment for the measure to take effect.

On Wednesday, Gov. Greg Abbott signed House Bill 49, which allows oil companies to sell fracking wastewater that has been treated for reuse. “We don’t really care what the source is as long as it’s good, clean water, said Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller.

Senate Bill 1194 establishes the Central Texas Water Alliance, a regional water authority composed of 27 entities and water improvement districts to develop and conserve water resources.
