Article Icon 1Federal Disaster Declared in Kerr County

A federal disaster has been declared as the death toll from this weekend’s devastating flooding in the Hill Country and Central Texas approaches 80, with dozens still missing.

In addition to at least 68 deaths in Kerr County, where at least 11 died at a Christian girls’ camp, nearly a dozen people died in and around Travis County.

More than 850 people have been rescued after an estimated 100 billion gallons of rain fell in just a few hours Friday morning, causing the Guadalupe River to rise 26 feet in 45 minutes.

Camp Mystic officials have confirmed the deaths of at least 10 girls and camp co-owner Dick Eastland, who was hailed as a hero for risking his life to save campers in danger.

U.S. Rep August Pfluger (R-San Angelo), whose daughters were attending the camp and were reunited safely with their family, praised the “countless heroes who acted so bravely during this tragic situation.”

Here’s a list of ways you can help those affected by this disaster.

An Alvarado police officer was shot in the neck Friday night while responding to a call about a suspicious person outside the federal Prairieland Detention Facility. Eight armed suspects were arrested, and the officer was released from the hospital after receiving treatment.

Officers were dispatched to the detention center shortly before 11 p.m. When one of them tried to engage a person who appeared to be carrying a firearm, multiple suspects began shooting at the officers before fleeing.

According to a federal law enforcement official, at least a dozen black-clad masked suspects vandalized vehicles and security cameras in the detention center parking lot before setting off fireworks to attract the attention of local officers. Some of those arrested were wearing body armor.

The following morning, U.S. Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche said the DOJ is “closely monitoring the attacks on DHS detention facilities,” adding that the department “has zero tolerance for assaults on federal officers or property.”

Article Icon 1Texas Bans Lab-Grown Meat

A new state law temporarily bans the sale of cultivated, or lab-grown, meat in Texas for two years beginning Sept. 1. The U.S. is one of a handful of countries that permit the sale of cultivated meat. Texas is the seventh state to implement a ban.

Senate Bill 261 received bipartisan support in the Texas Legislature and was signed by Gov. Greg Abbott.

Proponents of the ban, like the Center for the Environment and Welfare, have raised concerns about the long-term health effects of lab-grown meat. On the other hand, companies like Austin-based Bio B-Q and Upside Foods in Berkeley argue it is more ethical and efficient.

There is no slaughterhouse, there is no poop, there is no skin, guts, there’s no antibiotics used,” said Dr. Uma Valeti, CEO and Founder of Upside Foods.
