Flooding Victims Remembered, Warning System Scrutinized
As rescue operations from this weekend’s catastrophic flooding across Central Texas continued yesterday, the death toll has climbed to at least 104, with many still missing. That total includes 27 campers and counselors at Camp Mystic in Kerr County on the banks of the Guadalupe River.
Harrowing survival stories and biographies of those who died or are missing have dominated headlines. Brothers Brock and Braeden Davis described the moment they realized the water had entered their cabin at Camp La Junta in Hunt, and Christian Fell of Hunt recounted swimming out his window and standing on the meter box until the flood waters receded.
Local, state, and federal officials have been questioned about whether the warnings provided before the flooding were sufficient.
On Sunday, Kerrville City Manager Dalton Rice pledged a “full review” of their emergency alert system, and Gov. Greg Abbott said the issue would be added to the upcoming special session agenda.
Gunman Killed at McAllen Border Patrol Facility
Just days after multiple masked suspects opened fire on police officers at a federal detention center in Alvarado, a gunman fired shots at Border Patrol agents at the Rio Grande Valley Border Patrol Sector Annex in McAllen on Monday morning.
The shooter, identified as 27-year-old Ryan Louis Mosqueda, was killed when agents returned fire. He was wearing tactical gear and armed with a rifle. Authorities found more weapons, ammunition, and backpacks in his car. His last known address is in Michigan.
Three law enforcement officials were injured during the attack and taken to a nearby hospital. One officer was shot in the knee but is reported to be in stable condition.
Hours before the attack, Mosqueda’s father was pulled over by police 20 miles away in Weslaco. He told officers he was looking for his son, who was psychologically distressed and armed. The FBI is leading the investigation.
Stories of Hope Amid Tragedy
Amid the death and destruction caused by the flooding in Central Texas this week, some are finding hope in stories of heroic and unlikely rescues, as well as the massive outpouring of support from fellow Texans.
Coast Guard rescue swimmer Scott Ruskan, 26, has been credited with coordinating the evacuation of 165 people at Camp Mystic. Helicopters transported campers and staff members in groups of 10 to 15 at a time.
Center Point resident Carl Jeter, 70, directed first responders to a 22-year-old woman stranded in a tree after getting swept into the Guadalupe River 20 miles upstream in Ingram. Also, Riata Schoepf of Belton, the 19-year-old daughter of Schoepf’s BBQ owner Ronnie Schoepf, was lifted by helpers into a house with bed sheets after struggling to stay afloat in the current for about 20 minutes.
H-E-B, which was founded in Kerrville, delivered food to victims there and in Marble Falls and San Angelo. Grant Pinkerton, the owner of Pinkerton’s Barbecue in Houston and San Antonio, dropped off meals in Kerrville and plans to come back again this week.
Now, after setting records in Paris and London last year, they’re planning to expand into major destinations like Rome, Milan, and Florence. They even reserved the Nasdaq ticker PCSO.

The wealthiest companies tend to target the biggest markets. For example, NVIDIA’s stock skyrocketed nearly 200% compared to last year, helped by the $214B AI market’s tailwind.
Created by the man who sold his last real estate venture for $120M, Pacaso’s digital marketplace offers easy purchase, ownership, and enjoyment of luxury vacation homes. And their target market is worth a whopping $1.3T.
No wonder Pacaso has earned $110M+ in gross profits to date, including 41% YoY growth last year alone. Now, with official plans to add new homes in Milan, Rome, and Florence, they’re really hitting their stride. They even reserved the Nasdaq ticker PCSO.
