Article Icon 1More Flooding Hits Central Texas

Several Central Texas counties experienced another round of flash floods on Sunday, prompting local officials to issue mandatory evacuation orders and close dozens of low-water crossings.

More than nine inches of rain caused the Lampasas, Llano, and San Saba rivers to rise as much as 23 feet. Residents living in parts of five counties were ordered to evacuate. Sunday evening, Gov. Greg Abbott said that dozens of people had been rescued.

First responders in Lampasas County rescued two people whose car was swept a mile downriver, and a man was rescued in McGregor after getting stuck in an SUV at a low-water crossing.

Early Monday, the Frio River in Uvalde County rose about 16 feet. Local officials have urged those with reservations at the popular vacation area to stay put until the situation improves.

Kerr County and the city of Kerrville held meetings Monday morning to address ongoing recovery efforts following the July 4 flash floods, which claimed at least 106 lives in the area and more than 130 across the state.

The Kerr County Commissioners Court discussed overtime pay for first responders, using county property to shelter displaced families, and whether the county should adopt a voter-approval tax rate of 8%—rather than the standard 3.5%—due to the disaster.

City of Kerrville officials extended a local disaster declaration indefinitely and moved to request additional security from the state due to death threats received by some staff members. They also extended a suspension on all open records requests by seven days.

Later, search teams were urged to move to higher ground as weather reports for the region called for more rain.

The Major League Baseball Draft wrapped up last night in Atlanta, with the All-Star Game being played tonight. The Rangers and Astros added exciting high school prospects in the first round. Seven players from Texas were picked through the first three rounds.

With the No. 12 pick, the Rangers drafted 6-foot-3 power-hitting shortstop Gavin Fien from Great Oak High School in Temecula, California. Fien will forego his commitment to play for the Texas Longhorns and is estimated to make more than $5 million.

With the No. 21 pick, the Astros selected third baseman and shortstop Xavier Neyens from Mount Vernon High School in Mount Vernon, Washington. The 6-foot-4 left-handed slugger has committed to Oregon State University but is expected to sign with the Astros.

Also going in the first round were shortstop Kayson Cunningham of Johnson High School in San Antonio and Texas A&M Aggies outfielder Jace LaViolette. The Arizona Diamondbacks drafted Cunningham with the No. 18 pick, while the Cleveland Guardians selected LaViolette with the No. 27 pick.
