The Roundup

Article Icon 1Texas Drought Eases with Historic Rains

Unusually heavy rainfall, punctuated by the July 4 floods in Texas Hill Country and accompanied by cooler-than-normal summer temperatures, has significantly eased Texas’ persistent drought conditions.

Lakes and reservoirs across Texas were dangerously low heading into summer, with some hitting record lows in May.

Some of these lakes are now considered full, including Lake Buchanan, which has reached its highest point in 20 years.

While some lakes have risen more than 30 feet in less than two weeks, other reservoirs, such as those on the San Antonio and Nueces rivers, remain at historic lows. Some researchers suggest that despite the recent gains, the state still faces chronic water scarcity.
