Downpours Give Short Respite from Heat
Heavy rain drenched Southeast Texas Friday as a tropical depression from the Gulf moved inland, causing an isolated flood threat.
The downpours temporarily alleviated the intense heat in some areas, with the state’s first heat-related death reported this week as the heat index continues its summer surge.
The heat is presenting challenges to recovery efforts in Central Texas, as volunteer crews battle high temperatures after the July 4 flash floods.
Temperatures in North Texas reached triple digits for the first time this year, and forecasts call for a continued rise into next week.

Redistricting Hearings Intensify National Debate
Public hearings for Texas congressional redistricting are underway, with heated debates leading to shouting matches and one person being removed from a hearing in Austin Thursday night.
Redrawing Texas’ congressional map to include proposed additional districts has national implications as it could add more GOP seats in the U.S. House of Representatives.
Former U.S. Rep. Beto O’Rourke, fighting against the change, has held 11 rallies from Texas to the East Coast over the last month, including one rally last night in Austin.
Meanwhile, Democrats from the Texas House visited Sacramento and Chicago on Friday, seeking support from California Gov. Gavin Newsom and Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker.

Smoked Brisket Wins as State’s Most Iconic Food
What food is most iconic of Texas? Axios took that question to new competitive heights in a survey this week, asking respondents to fill out a Texas food bracket.
Smoked brisket won the day in the four-round competition, beating out runner-up breakfast tacos in the final round with a 62% vote.
The nearly 800 participants placed queso and pecan pie in the semi-finals, while fajitas, Gulf shrimp, tamales, and cobbler all got first-round nods.
You can check out the whole bracket here (along with some brisket fun facts).

Texas summers don’t mess around. Whether you’re working outdoors, grilling, or sweating through a ballgame, you’re losing more than just water—you’re losing electrolytes.
LMNT is a zero-sugar electrolyte drink mix that gives your body what it actually needs: sodium, potassium, and magnesium—without the junk.
A bunch of us on the Flyover staff are hooked on it. We’ve been using it after yard work, workouts, or even just long, hot drives. And yes—we’re in an ongoing flavor debate. (Watermelon Salt is in the lead, but Citrus has its defenders.)
Right now, LMNT is offering a free sample pack with any purchase so you can try all the flavors and join the conversation.
