Article Icon 1House Democrats Flee State

Texas House Democrats fled the state yesterday in an effort to stop Republicans from passing a redistricting plan that would create five additional Republican-leaning districts ahead of the 2026 midterms. Currently, 25 of the state’s 38 seats in Congress are held by Republicans.

Most of the chamber’s 62 Democrats went to Chicago to meet with Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker, one of several Democratic governors who have threatened to redraw maps in their states to add more seats favoring Democrats.

In a statement for the Texas House Democratic Caucus, State Rep. Gene Wu of Houston said he and his colleagues “will not allow disaster relief to be held hostage to a Trump gerrymander,” declaring that “this corrupt special session is over.”

Speaker Dustin Burrows (R-Lubbock) insisted that the House would convene at 3 p.m. today, saying that “all options will be on the table” if a quorum is not present. Attorney General Ken Paxton said he supports the “immediate arrest of these rogue lawmakers who’ve fled their duties.”

Gloria Chavez, the Rio Grande Valley (RGV) Border Patrol Sector Chief since October 2022, has been replaced by Jason Schneider as acting chief patrol agent, according to a social media post from U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) last Friday.

Chavez was reportedly escorted from the RGV Sector headquarters in Edinburg prior to the announcement. She is a Brownsville native and a 30-year veteran of the agency, having previously served as the chief patrol agent of the El Paso Sector, California’s El Centro Sector, and Washington’s Spokane Sector.

In a statement, CBP Commissioner Rodney Scott characterized the removal as a “disciplinary action,” affirming the agency’s commitment to integrity. “Misconduct—on or off duty—by a few distracts from the honorable service of the many,” he said.

Article Icon 1Austin Tower Is Tallest in Texas

The 74-story Waterline tower in Austin is now the tallest building in Texas after the final beam of the 1,025-foot skyscraper was installed last Friday. The 1,002-foot JPMorgan Chase Tower in Houston had been the tallest in the state since 1981.

Developed by Lincoln Property Co. and Kairoi Residential, the project includes 352 luxury apartments, 703,000 square feet of office space, a 252-room hotel, and 24,000 square feet of retail and restaurant space. It’s situated along a network of parks and trails around Lady Bird Lake.

Andy Smith, Lincoln’s senior vice president, said the company didn’t plan for Waterline to be the tallest building in Texas. “It just kind of grew into that,” he said.

Work on the high-rise began in 2022 amid a spate of new development in downtown Austin. When it opens next year, Waterline is expected to have a “transformational impact” on the area.
