Legislative Session Ending with Next One Promised
Republican leaders said Tuesday that the Texas Legislature will conclude the special session on Friday if quorum-breaking House Democrats have not returned by then. Gov. Greg Abbott has said he would call a second special session immediately, promising “no reprieve for the derelict Democrats who fled the state.”
The absent lawmakers claimed victory, saying they “have killed this corrupt special session on behalf of Texas families.” A spokesperson said their return is contingent on whether Republicans in the legislature commit to “prioritizing flood victims over redistricting that hurts Texans.”
Meanwhile, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick praised the Texas Senate for passing every item on Abbott’s special session agenda, promising to do so “over and over again” if necessary.
Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has called for Beto O’Rourke to be arrested and jailed, claiming he has defied a court injunction blocking him from raising money for the quorum-breaking Democrats.
First Flood Lawsuit Filed
The family of flood victim Jayda Floyd, 22, of Odessa, filed the first lawsuit related to last month’s flash floods. Floyd and her fiancé, Odessa police officer Bailey Martin, 23, were killed while staying at the HTR TX Hill Country Resort on the Guadalupe River in Kerrville.
The family is seeking over $1 million in financial relief from the campground’s owners and investors, operator, and general manager. The lawsuit alleges the defendants were aware of the risk of flash flooding but not adequately prepared and continued to operate the resort without warning guests of the risk.
Floyd, an Ector County juvenile probation officer who was pursuing a master’s degree in psychology, reportedly helped Martin’s siblings climb onto the top of the RV as the floodwaters rose, saving their lives.
The resort has expressed sympathies for the family’s loss but is denying wrongdoing, citing the unprecedented severity of the flooding.
State’s Largest Film Studio Launches
Taylor Sheridan, the creator of the TV shows Yellowstone and Landman, has launched a 450,000-square-foot film studio in Fort Worth as a base of operations for his growing portfolio of projects.
Located in the AllianceTexas business district, the two-building campus is the largest film studio in Texas. It features six sound stages that can accommodate four productions simultaneously.
The space is reserved primarily for Sheridan’s projects over the next three years, but an upcoming expansion will be accessible to other industry professionals.
“Texas offers something rare: the space to dream big, the freedom to build fast, and a community that still believes storytelling matters,” said Sheridan. Fort Worth Mayor Mattie Parker said the investment “bodes well for our future.”
