Article Icon 1USDA Announces $750M Fly Factory Coming to Texas

Governor Greg Abbott and U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins announced on Friday plans to build a $750 million fly factory in South Texas to combat the spread of the New World screwworm.

The new facility, located on Moore Air Base outside Edinburg, is set to begin releasing sterile male screwworm flies into the wild. The USDA also plans to deploy $100 million in technology, including fly traps, lures, and border security measures.

The announcement follows steps taken in June by the USDA amid reports that the parasites were pushing northward from Central America.

The USDA has estimated the potential cost of a screwworm outbreak to Texas’ economy to be $1.8 billion.

A federal court in San Antonio on Friday heard arguments on Senate Bill 10, which requires public schools to display the Ten Commandments by Sept. 1.

Four organizations sought an injunction on the grounds that the law violates the First Amendment’s freedom-of-religion provision.

A lawyer from Attorney General Ken Paxton’s office argued for the law, saying it is a passive display, causes no injury, and reflects the foundation of the American legal system.

The parties will return virtually Monday to finish questioning witnesses and deliver closing arguments, with a decision expected before Sept. 1.
