A convenience store near Fredericksburg sold one of two winning tickets for Saturday’s $1.78 billion Powerball drawing, the second-largest U.S. lottery prize ever. The other ticket was sold in Missouri.

The $2 ticket was purchased at Big’s Convenience Store off U.S. Highway 290 east of town. The winning numbers—which were not selected with the quick pick method—were 11-23-44-61-62 with the Red Powerball number of 17.

According to the Texas Lottery, the winner selected to receive a pretax lump sum of $410.3 million rather than $893.5 million over 30 years of annuitized payments.

The odds of winning the jackpot, which was last won on May 31, were 1 in 292.2 million.

Article Icon 1Corpus Christi Kills Desalination Plant

The Corpus Christi City Council voted last week to suspend plans for a controversial desalination plant after years of rising cost estimates and community pushback.

The project was approved in 2019, when a plant with a treatment capacity of 10 million gallons was estimated to cost $140 million. Last month, the estimated cost for a plant with a 30-million-gallon-per-day treatment capacity was $1.2 billion.

Residents have raised concerns that the plant would increase the bay’s salinity levels. Corpus Christi’s public water system has been strained by a new plastics plant and steel mill, and residents have been banned from outdoor water use since March.

Industry representatives warned that the project’s suspension would cripple the local economy. One council member claimed Gov. Greg Abbott’s chief of staff threatened to withhold state funding for the city if it didn’t continue to fund the plant’s development. Three speakers were arrested during the 13-hour meeting.

Article Icon 1Brothers Complete 5,500-Mile Bike Ride

Brothers Bobby and Raleigh Jenkins, business owners and Texas A&M graduates, biked from Anchorage, Alaska, to Kyle Field over the summer to raise awareness for personal causes. The 5,500-mile journey took 80 days.

Bobby Jenkins, the owner and CEO of ABC Home & Commercial Services in Bryan and Austin, rode in memory of his grandson Moss, who died at the age of 15 months. “To go up the hills every single pedal, I’m thinking about Moss,” he said.

Raleigh Jenkins is the chairman of the board for ABC Houston. He dedicated his ride to Mission Lazarus, an organization that supports families in Haiti and Honduras. “It’s time to lean in and help Haitians to get back on their feet,” he said.

This is the third long bike ride the brothers have completed for charity. “Yeah, we are physically tired, but we knew going into this that this would probably be the last big event that we do like this,” said Bobby. See photos of the trip here.
