Abbott Bans THC Sales for Minors
Gov. Greg Abbott issued an executive order yesterday to ban the sale of THC products to minors and require retailers to check buyers’ IDs. The move comes after Abbott vetoed an outright ban on the products and the legislature failed to pass a bill that would further regulate them.
The order directs the Texas Department of State Health Services and the Alcoholic Beverage Commission to create rules to implement the restriction and review testing and labeling requirements. Abbott didn’t specify a minimum age for purchase.
“Texas will not wait when it comes to protecting children and families,” said Abbott, claiming his order ensures “Safety for kids, freedom for adults.”
Industry representatives for the more than 8,000 consumable hemp retailers welcomed the development, saying tighter regulations would force bad actors out of business. State Sen. Charles Perry (R-Lubbock), the author of legislation to ban THC products, insisted the “debate isn’t over.”
Houston Imam Threatens Muslim Store Owners
A Houston imam is warning Muslim-owned businesses to stop selling “haraam”—items like alcohol, pork, and lottery tickets that are forbidden by Islam—or face protests.
In a viral video, Imam F. Qasim ibn Ali Khan is seen entering a convenience store and confronting the clerk. “You know as a merchant you have every legal right to sell whatever you want, but as Muslim I have the responsibility to educate people,” he said.
In response, Gov. Greg Abbott said he “signed laws that BAN Sharia Law and Sharia Compounds in Texas,” adding that “No business & no individual should fear fools like this.” Likewise, U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz said, “Sharia law has no force in America. This religious harassment is outrageous.”
The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) accused the governor of “fearmongering about Islam,” urging him to visit a mosque.
