Article Icon 1Houston Postpones Annual Event Amid Strike

Houston Mayor John Whitmire indefinitely postponed the annual State of the City address, originally slated for Sep. 25, “out of respect” for the ongoing Hilton Americas-Houston hotel strike.

The strike, which began on Labor Day, has now been extended 10 additional days by union workers in an effort to secure a $23 minimum wage, vowing that “business as usual will not continue.”

Given the rarity of labor strikes in the state—this one has been described as the first hospitality workers’ strike of its kind in modern Texas history—Texas historians are calling it a “harbinger,” whose outcome could set a precedent for future union actions.

The city of Mission is gearing up for a growth spurt as a “massive” new development is set to kick off construction, with debt to be paid by future El Milagro residents over 40 years.

The new subdivision, called El Milagro, is described as a live-work-play development, offering 347 single-family homes, 99 townhouse lots, and at least one apartment complex, alongside commercial, retail, and civic spaces.

The project has come under scrutiny after a lone voter last fall approved $167.5 million in Mission taxes be paid out for the development over a 40-year period.

Surprised legislators, shocked that the single person who voted was able to authorize the project, then considered a bill to dissolve the administrative district for the project in the state legislature this year.

Number 16 Texas A&M faces No. 8 Notre Dame in South Bend tonight in one of college football’s marquee games of the week. Here’s viewing information.

The Aggies (2-0) face their first major challenge of the season with Notre Dame, after rolling over UTSA and Utah State in the first weeks of the season.

Notre Dame enters the game as a 6.5-point favorite, but could be in a must-win situation after losing their first game to Miami two weeks ago and then having a bye week.

In other Texas football action, Baylor plays Samford at 11 a.m., Texas Tech (21) takes on Oregon St. in Lubbock at 2:30 p.m., and UTEP travels to Austin to face Texas (7) at 3:15 p.m. See the full schedule here.
