New K-8 Social Studies Sequence Approved
The Texas State Board of Education (SBOE) voted 8-7 last week to approve a new K-8 social studies sequence that emphasizes U.S. and Texas history over world history. It also favors a chronological approach rather than a topical one.
The SBOE had narrowed the options for a new framework to one supported by the conservative Texas Public Policy Foundation and another backed by the progressive Texas Council for Social Studies. While the latter prevailed in a preliminary vote, members ultimately approved the former.
The new framework lays a foundation of “Stories of America and Texas” in kindergarten through second grade, followed by increasingly in-depth instruction on Western civilization, U.S. history, and Texas history in third through eighth grade.
After the vote, the Texas Public Policy Foundation said the new framework “ensures that our kids will learn the true story of freedom: where it began, how it grew, and how Texas stands as its greatest embodiment.”
Stray Dogs Terrorize Neighborhood
A pack of stray dogs is prowling around a Godley subdivision in Johnson County, and officials say they can’t do anything about it. Alarmed residents have shared videos showing up to 40 dogs at a time roaming the neighborhood.
The dogs are believed to have been abandoned. Last night’s city council agenda called for discussion on a proposal to increase penalties for dumping animals. Neither the city nor the county has an animal shelter. “There is not a solution at this time,” said Precinct 1 Commissioner Rick Bailey.
Some residents worry it is only a matter of time before one of the dogs attacks someone. “They’re feral and they’re aggressive, and I don’t want them near any children whatsoever,” said Heather Figueroa.
“We now have dogs… that are out and about at the same time that my children and our children are on the streets,” said Bruce Moats. “The dogs are going to look for food, and I don’t want my children to be that dog food,” he added.
Frisco Teen Named Kid of the Year
Tejasvi Manoj, a student at Frisco ISD’s Lebanon Trail High School, has been named TIME‘s Kid of the Year for creating an app to help seniors identify phishing scams and other cybercrimes.
After her grandfather nearly fell victim to a $2,000 debt repayment scam last year, Manoj learned that similar scams cost nearly 860,000 victims over $16 billion in losses each year. Having participated in programs like Girls Who Code, she developed an app to address the problem.
Currently in prerelease, Shield Seniors identifies scams by using AI to analyze suspicious emails and texts. It includes a chatbot, a tool to upload screenshots, and a guide for reporting fraud.
Since developing her app, Manoj has also received an honorable mention in last year’s Congressional App Challenge, delivered a TEDx talk in Plano, and visited assisted living facilities to talk with residents about staying safe online.
