Paxton Investigating ‘Leftist Terror Cells’
Attorney General Ken Paxton is launching an initiative to “infiltrate and uproot leftist terror cells” in Texas in response to the assassination of Charlie Kirk and “the disturbing rise of leftist violence across the country.”
Paxton cited recent attacks on ICE facilities in Alvarado and Dallas in announcing the undercover operations. He also mentioned President Trump’s designation of Antifa as a domestic terrorist organization.
According to federal authorities, Antifa and anarchist ideologies motivated more than a dozen armed militants who opened fire on Alvarado’s ICE facility on July 4. One officer was briefly hospitalized after being struck in the neck.
“Leftist political terrorism is a clear and present danger,” Paxton said in a statement. “To those demented souls who seek to kill, steal, and destroy our country, know this: you cannot hide, you cannot escape, and justice is coming.”
Rio Grande Bridge Transferred to Cameron County
The Brownsville and Matamoros International Bridge is now jointly owned by Cameron County and Mexico, following commissioners’ unanimous approval of an agreement to purchase Union Pacific Railroad’s 50% ownership stake.
The oldest of four Cameron County bridges spanning the Rio Grande, Congress authorized its construction in 1909 as a joint project of the St. Louis, Brownsville and Mexico Railway and the Mexican National Railway. A second bridge for auto and foot traffic was constructed immediately adjacent to the original in 1997.
A Cameron County attorney hailed the agreement as “the only transaction of its kind in American history.” It’s unclear how much the county has agreed to pay Union Pacific for its stake.
Next year, parts of the nearby Gateway International Bridge will be shut down as it undergoes a $264 million expansion project to double its capacity. Traffic at the B&M Bridge is expected to increase during the construction period.
54,000-Acre State Park Proposed
The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department plans to acquire a 54,000-acre property in Kinney and Edwards counties to create a new state park. Owned by the Moody family of Galveston, the Silver Lake Ranch could be the largest addition to the state park system since the 1980s.
The land reaches between 1,400 and 2,270 feet in elevation and includes 7.5 miles of the West Nueces River and a 30-acre spring-fed lake. The ranch is home to white-tailed deer, turkeys, javelinas, and doves, and it serves as a potential habitat for the endangered golden-cheeked warbler.
If approved, the purchase would be the first funded by the $1 billion Centennial Parks Conservation Fund, approved by voters in 2023. After the acquisition, the park would be open to guided tours and limited day-use within 12 months. Hiking and camping would come later.
Public comments on the acquisition will be accepted until November 5. The Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission is scheduled to vote on the purchase on November 6.
