Question: What Texas frontiersman was known to catch live wolves?

Answer: Jack Abernathy. Born in Bosque County in 1876, he began working as a cowboy for the A-K-X Ranch at age 11. To prevent wolves from threatening livestock, he developed a unique method to capture them—jumping onto them from a horse and forcing his arm into their jaws. “Catch-’Em-Alive Jack” would sell the wolves to zoos, circuses, and traveling shows. Abernathy’s fame eventually reached the White House, and President Theodore Roosevelt appointed him as the U.S. Marshal for the Western District of Oklahoma.
