Article Icon 1Iran Strikes Divide Texas Officials

The state’s elected officials are weighing in on the U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran, with Republicans largely supporting the action and Democrats expressing criticism and pushing for a war powers resolution.

“Texas stands with our Commander-in-Chief,” said Gov. Greg Abbott. Sen. John Cornyn expressed hope for Iran’s “dark days to come to an end,” while Sen. Ted Cruz said the strikes “will enhance the national security of the United States and our allies.”

Attorney General Ken Paxton praised Trump’s “courageous leadership,” U.S. Rep. Wesley Hunt said the attacks “ended a threat to humanity,” and U.S. Rep. Michael McCaul urged Iranians to “rise up and seize this generational opportunity to grasp democracy, prosperity, and a future free from tyranny.”

On the Democrat side, U.S. Rep. Greg Casar criticized Trump for “sending other people’s kids to risk their lives in a senseless regime change war.” U.S. Rep. Jasmine Crockett said Trump “refuses to even pretend that he cares about following the law,” while State Rep. James Talarico called for “no more forever wars.”

Article Icon 1RFK Visits Austin

Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. visited Austin during his “Take Back Your Health” tour, promoting the Trump administration’s dietary guidelines and the “Make America Healthy Again” agenda.

On Thursday, Kennedy kicked off a “national BBQ tour” at Terry Black’s Barbecue, which Dell CEO Michael Dell called a “great choice.” Later, he spoke at an “Eat Real Food” rally, where he praised Texas for “leading the way with MAHA.”

On Friday, Kennedy toured Austin ISD’s Cunningham Elementary School, where he reviewed meal options and served lunch to students. “It is so great to see these kids getting healthy food, hot food. This is what we need to do all across the country,” he said.

In January, Kennedy and U.S. Department of Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins introduced new dietary guidelines that prioritize protein and saturated fats from dairy and meat. Kennedy has also worked to reduce the prevalence of food dyes and ultra-processed foods.

Article Icon 1Falcon Dam Sets Winter Temp Record

Thursday’s heat wave tied or broke daily temperature records in several cities across Central and South Texas. If confirmed, a preliminary reading of 106 degrees at Falcon Dam would be the hottest temperature ever recorded in the U.S. in winter.

The National Weather Service office in Brownsville reported the reading, which was recorded at Falcon Dam’s NOAA Cooperative Observer Program (COOP) station. It could take several weeks to confirm the reading.

Earlier, an automated NOAA weather station in La Puerta recorded a 104-degree reading, tying the winter high set in Rio Grande City in 1902.

San Antonio (95), Victoria (89), Corpus Christi (95), McAllen (100), and El Paso (83) also set or tied daily highs.
