The Roundup

Article Icon 1Corpus Christi Gets Some Water Relief

Corpus Christi Water secured a new temporary groundwater permit on Wednesday, authorizing the city to discharge groundwater from its Western and ERF Well Fields into the Nueces River for three years or when the Governor’s Drought Disaster Proclamation ends, whichever comes first.

In addition, a planned curtailment from the Lake Texana reservoir was postponed.

These developments “significantly improve the region’s water supply outlook,” according to a press release from the city.

The water crisis has halted some business development, with Corpus Christi City Councilman Roland Barrera saying the city has already missed out on up to $20 billion in massive projects tied to industries that require large volumes of water.

The number of 100-degree days in Dallas and Fort Worth has climbed in recent decades, according to a study by the Dallas Morning News. By averaging the number of triple-digit days each year per decade, the report found that the 2020s have been the hottest period so far, just edging out the 1950s.

The study also found that in previous decades, the average high temperature during a “cool” summer was around 81 degrees, but more recently, the “coolest” years have been about 84 degrees on average.

Many North Texas counties are currently in drought, including Wichita County, which was upgraded to D2 Severe Drought status this week.

In addition, North Texas is bracing for record-breaking “weather whiplash” this week as a summer-like heat wave pushes temperatures more than 20 degrees above normal.

Article Icon 1UT Austin Researchers Discover New Dinosaur

University of Texas at Austin researchers discovered a new dinosaur species recently in Korea, named Doolysaurus after Dooly, an “iconic dinosaur character” in a Korean cartoon.

This dinosaur would fit on your desk… It’s comfortably, maybe the size of a small dog or a large cat,” said Dr. Julia Clarke, a professor at UT’s Jackson School of Geosciences.

The specimen includes rare skull fragments hidden inside rock, revealed using a micro-CT scan at the University of Texas.

The fossil, found on Korea’s Aphae Island, is the first new dinosaur species identified in the country in 15 years.
