Article Icon 1ICE Deployed to Hobby, Bush Airports

ICE agents have been deployed to Houston’s Hobby Airport and George Bush Intercontinental Airport to free up TSA agents for the security screening process amid an ongoing partial government shutdown that has caused hundreds of the agency’s employees to quit or call in sick.

The two major hubs are among the 14 or more airports across the country where ICE has been spotted assisting TSA. Federal officials haven’t specified where ICE officers would be deployed due to security concerns.

Last Saturday, 11.5% of TSA’s 60,000 or so officers didn’t show up for work, the highest nationwide absence rate recorded since the shutdown started on Feb. 14. On Saturday, 42.4% of TSA officers assigned to Bush missed work, while 47.4% assigned to Hobby called out.

ICE agents will perform tasks such as monitoring exits, checking identification, and providing crowd control so that TSA officers can focus on the screening process.

A woman and her 7-year-old son were killed when a driver crashed into their Stephenville home around 3:26 a.m. Sunday morning.

Gracie Yates, 18, was arrested at the scene and charged with two counts of criminally negligent homicide. She was detained in the Erath County Jail with bonds totaling $29,000.

Barbara Rocha’s husband and their young daughter survived. “He told me what had happened, but I just felt helpless,” said neighbor Reese Skinner. “All I could do is offer my condolences and a hug.”

Police have not indicated why Yates veered off the road and crashed into the family’s home. A GoFundMe has been set up to help with funeral expenses and home repairs.

Cooper Lutkenhaus, a 17-year-old junior at Northwest High School in Justin, won the 800-meter race at the World Athletics Indoor Track and Field Championships in Poland on Sunday, becoming the sport’s youngest-ever champion in an individual event.

Lutkenhaus crossed the finish line with a time of 1:44.24, beating Eliott Crestan of Belgium by 0.14 seconds. “I came out here thinking I probably wasn’t the favorite, but any time I feel like I can step into a final I have a chance to win,” he said.

Lutkenhaus turned pro last year at 16 after finishing second in the 800 meters at the USA Track and Field Outdoor Championships, where his 1:42.27 broke the under-18 world record by more than a second.

Cooper’s accomplishments are a testament to his hard work and desire to push himself to levels no one his age has ever accomplished,” Northwest ISD said in a statement. Lutkenhaus’ mother is the principal of Northwest High School, and his father is the director of athletics.
