The Roundup

Article Icon 1EF-3 Tornado Hits Mineral Wells

An EF-3 tornado hit Mineral Wells Tuesday evening, injuring five people, causing widespread damage, and displacing several families. Softball-sized hail fell in parts of North and Central Texas, including Godley, Hillsboro, and Lacy-Lakeview.

As of yesterday afternoon, nine tornados have hit North Texas since Saturday. Tuesday night’s storm flattened multiple homes and businesses in Mineral Wells, littering the town with debris, downed trees, and power lines.

“We’re going to get through this,” said Police Chief Tim Denison. Assistance is being provided by aid organizations at multiple locations in the area. The city has implemented a curfew between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. until further notice.

In Hillsboro, drivers on I-35 took shelter in the bathroom of a Buc-ee’s. Strong winds ripped the beaver logo off its sign.

A lawsuit has been filed against city-owned utility CPS Energy by two people injured in a San Antonio home explosion last week. A gas leak was detected in the neighborhood where two homes on the same street exploded within the span of a few hours.

Five people, including a child, were injured in the April 21 explosions, and 10 homes were evacuated. Jose Ochoa and Mayte Terrie Reeves, who sustained permanent physical injuries when the second home exploded, are seeking $1 million each in damages.

The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the incident, and three city council members have requested a special session to review the emergency response. CPS Energy has distributed gas and carbon monoxide detectors to residents in the Preston Hollow neighborhood.

Since 2020, there have been 13 explosions at residences in and around San Antonio.

Work has begun on a Frisco park that will eventually span more than 1,000 acres—larger than New York City’s 843-acre Central Park.

The property for Grand Park was purchased in 2005, and residents approved bonds for its construction the following year. Cleanup from the site’s Exide Technologies battery recycling plant, which closed in 2012, significantly delayed development of the park.

The park’s first phase, called Civic Park, is expected to open in October 2027 and will include an amphitheater, splash pads, and a large pond. When fully completed, Grand Park will include over 20 miles of trails, pickleball courts, a sand volleyball court, and a skate park.

“Today is a true milestone in the future of Frisco,” Mayor Jeff Cheney said. “This is a generational gift for this community.”
