Article Icon 1Allred Tops Johnson in Dallas Runoff

Colin Allred won the Democratic primary runoff for the newly redrawn 33rd Congressional District in Dallas on Tuesday night, unseating Rep. Julie Johnson and returning to Congress after one term away.

Rep. Jasmine Crockett backed Allred while state Rep. James Talarico stumped for Johnson. Some analysts said the race served as a proxy match after Talarico defeated Crockett in the March Senate primary.

Republican-led redistricting put both candidates in the same district, creating an unusual contest that Allred won by roughly 10 points. He had dropped his Senate bid last year as the Senate field expanded to include Talarico and Crockett.

Johnson, who took office in January 2025 after winning her seat in November 2024, was the first openly LGBTQ+ member of Congress from Texas.

Article Icon 1Cop Killer Gets Life without Parole

A Kaufman County judge sentenced Darrian Cortez Johnson to life without parole on Wednesday after he pleaded guilty to the capital murder of Terrell Police Officer Jacob Candanoza.

Candanoza was shot and killed during a traffic stop on State Highway 34 in 2024, a case that drew statewide attention and left the Terrell community in mourning.

Johnson, 25, originally from Mississippi, accepted a plea deal ahead of his capital murder trial, trading the possibility of the death penalty for a guaranteed life sentence with no chance of parole.

Article Icon 1Texas Adds Second-Largest State Park

Texas just acquired the nearly 54,000-acre Silver Lake Ranch in the Hill Country, making it the state’s second-largest state park.

The property straddles Edwards and Kinney counties and features limestone caves, cliff formations, steep canyons, rolling hills, and a 30-acre spring-fed lake. The former working ranch will be formally named Silver Lake State Park.

The Moody Foundation donated nearly 88% of the ranch to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, which purchased the remainder for $11.85 million using the Centennial Parks Conservation Fund and sporting goods sales tax. It marks the fund’s largest acquisition to date.

Silver Lake State Park will be second only to the 311,000-acre Big Bend Ranch State Park in size.

A Note from The Texas Flyover

We’re asking for your support. Here’s why it matters.

The Texas Flyover will always be free. Producing it isn’t.

Two questions before you scroll past:

Do you rely on us for news without the spin?

Is fact-first journalism worth fighting for?

If yes, this one’s for you.

“Trust in the news media is at an all-time low. Americans deserve better. We’re trying to be that better.”

We live in a moment when the institutions once trusted to deliver the news have lost the public’s faith, and for good reason. Corporate media has an agenda. Legacy outlets have a bias. Trust in the press has fallen to historic lows, lower even than trust in Congress. That’s not an accident.

The Texas Flyover was built to be different. No agenda. No spin. Just the news, clearly written, fairly covered, and delivered every morning to 5 million readers across this country.

We’re not funded by billionaires. We’re not backed by a corporation with an angle. We’re supported by readers, and that’s exactly how we want it.

Will you chip in to help support The Texas Flyover?

Even $10 sends us a powerful message: you believe in what we’re building, and you’re willing to support us. Giving more, $50 or $100, helps us grow our footprint, launch new editions, and deliver more of the fact-first journalism America is hungry for.
