Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton secured a nearly $34 million settlement from drugmaker AstraZeneca on Monday over alleged illegal kickbacks tied to Medicaid prescriptions.
Paxton’s office sued under the Texas Health Care Program Fraud Prevention Act, alleging the company offered providers free nursing services, reimbursement support, and other inducements to steer them toward prescribing AstraZeneca drugs.
Many of those prescriptions were covered by Texas Medicaid, the office said, producing millions in claims it called tainted by the company’s payments. AstraZeneca will pay the state $33,998,000.
“I will not allow Big Pharma to misuse taxpayer dollars to put profit ahead of Texans’ health,” Paxton said in a statement.
The agreement resolves the state’s claims, which AstraZeneca settled without the allegations being decided in court.
Three Charged in Del Rio Killing
Three women have been charged with murder in the broad-daylight stabbing of a 32-year-old Del Rio mother, Caroline Peña.
Del Rio police were called to Val Verde Regional Medical Center around 2:10 p.m. Thursday after Peña arrived with multiple stab wounds. The attack happened in the 800 block of East 10th Street.
Peña, a twin and mother of five, was flown to a San Antonio hospital and died that night. Friends said the confrontation unfolded at a busy intersection near a Sonic.
Surveillance video, evidence, and witness interviews led detectives to Kitty Mia Diaz, 21; Amaya Diaz, 19; and Kyandra Renee Faz, 21, who are held at a GEO Correctional Facility in Del Rio.
Police have not released a motive and say the investigation is ongoing, with additional charges possible. Del Rio sits on the Rio Grande about 150 miles west of San Antonio.
Paramount+ Greenlights Texas Tech Docuseries
Paramount+ has greenlit a four-episode docuseries following the Texas Tech Red Raiders football team through their offseason, set to premiere ahead of the fall 2026 college season.
Produced by Skydance Sports and Second Wind Creative, the untitled series has been filming since January and follows head coach Joey McGuire as he rebuilds the roster.
Production began before quarterback Brendan Sorsby was ruled ineligible over a gambling case and eventually left the team. Texas Tech is coming off its first Big 12 title last December and a Top 10 ranking, though the Red Raiders fell to Oregon 23-0 in the Orange Bowl.
