Man Shot by ICE Remains Detained

A 28-year-old DoorDash driver shot by an ICE officer in North Austin on Sunday is being held at a detention center in Pearsall, southwest of San Antonio, with the bullet still lodged in his back, his attorney said.

Wilber Rafael Garces Perez was delivering for DoorDash when an unmarked car sideswiped him twice, and officers shot him in the back, attorney Kate Lincoln-Goldfinch said. Garces Perez was apparently treated at a hospital and then released into ICE custody. His lawyer reported that he had received no pain medication while being detained and slept on the floor.

The Department of Homeland Security said Garces Perez is a Venezuelan who entered the country illegally and had a final order of removal, adding that he was attempting to flee when he was shot. Lincoln-Goldfinch says Garces Perez entered legally seeking asylum and holds a valid work permit.

U.S. Rep. Greg Casar and the civil rights group LULAC called on ICE to release him. Mayor Kirk Watson said he’s “very angry and extremely disappointed,” and the Travis County district attorney’s office asked to co-lead the investigation.

Three Drown in Houston County Lake

Three men drowned after their fishing boat capsized Sunday evening on a private lake near Grapeland in Houston County, and the search for the third man stretched into Monday afternoon.

Four men were fishing when the boat flipped over at around 7 p.m., Houston County Chief Deputy Ryan Martin said. One man swam to shore and made it out safely. The other three never resurfaced.

The call came in at 8:06 p.m., and deputies searched into the early hours. The sheriff’s office called in divers from the Huntsville Fire Department, with several other agencies assisting.

The bodies of two of the men were found in the lake on Monday morning, and the third was recovered later in the day. Their names haven’t been released. The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department is investigating.

Musk Pitches Austin-San Antonio Tunnel

Elon Musk said over the weekend that his Boring Company is working on a 200-mph “precursor Hyperloop” tunnel that would move riders between Austin and San Antonio in under 30 minutes.

The two cities sit about 80 miles apart on I-35, roughly an 80-minute drive that congestion can stretch to 2 1/2 hours. Amtrak takes 3 1/2 hours, and a bus runs about 90 minutes.

The Boring Company, valued at $23 billion after a $3 billion raise this month, said it would be “excited and honored to build this massive infrastructure project.” Its only working system is the Las Vegas Loop.

Musk didn’t say how the tunnel would reach those speeds, and his post included no route, timeline, or cost. The company’s newest machine, Prufrock-5, is finishing a test tunnel in Bastrop, with another headed to Nashville this month.
