State Seeks Info on Data Center Water Usage
The Texas Public Utility Commission (PUC) is sending surveys to the state’s data centers and cryptomining facilities to collect information about their water usage. The surveys must be completed within six weeks, and the PUC will produce a report on the findings by the end of this year.
Data centers and cryptomining operations use water directly to cool their servers and indirectly through the electricity they consume. A recent study by the Houston Advanced Research Center suggests data centers could account for about 3% of the state’s water usage by 2030.
“We want those jobs. We need those jobs,” said State Rep. Armando Walle (D-Houston), who authored the budget rider to fund the survey. “However, we also have to be very good stewards of our water resources.”
On Tuesday, Hood County commissioners rejected a moratorium on new data centers after two state legislators penned an open letter arguing they lacked constitutional authority to enact one.
Texans Connected to Jeffrey Epstein
Several prominent Texans have been connected to financier and child sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein, according to records of correspondence released by the Department of Justice.
The late Ken Starr, the former president of Baylor University and the independent counsel who investigated President Bill Clinton during the Monica Lewinsky scandal, helped Epstein secure the 2008 plea deal that enabled him to avoid federal sex trafficking charges. Starr hosted Epstein at Baylor in 2012.
Advertising executive Terry Kafka of Dallas, a childhood friend of Epstein, wrote him a lewd letter for his 50th birthday. Merrie Spaeth, a Dallas public relations consultant, worked for Epstein following his plea deal.
Former University of Texas professor Thomas Hubbard asked Epstein’s foundation for funding to host a conference for students to “interrogate the concept of sexual consent.” Dallas-based dating site Match.com emailed Epstein the profiles of women in their twenties after he registered as a sex offender.
Glen Powell Producing Texas Chainsaw TV Series
Austin native Glen Powell is executive producing a TV series based on the classic horror film The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, according to a report from Deadline. He’s also been tapped to produce the franchise’s 10th film.
Independent New York-based studio A24 won a bidding war to purchase the rights to the franchise last September. JT Mollner, the director of Strange Darling, will direct the TV series, while Powell’s company Barnstorm will help produce it.
Mollner said the TV show won’t be a remake of the 1974 original, explaining that Tobe Hooper and Kim Henkel created a “perfect film” that’s “the gold standard for horror.”
Powell, who isn’t expected to appear on screen, said The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is “one of my favorite films” and “remains one of the definitive movies of my home state.”
