Article Icon 1 Texas Company Lands on the Moon

Houston-based Intuitive Machines successfully landed its lunar lander Odysseus on the moon, marking America’s first private landing on the lunar surface.

The lunar landing is a huge victory for the Texas business, launched in 2013 by three space enthusiasts, two of them veterans of NASA’s Johnson Space Center, just down the road from their current headquarters. It employs over 200 people.

Intuitive Machines stock tripled since the launch of the Odysseus lander last week, though dipping a bit just before the landing. The mission was funded by a $118 million fee for carrying a NASA science payload.

Article Icon 1Dallas City Manager Resigns

Dallas City Manager T.C. Broadnax has announced his resignation under pressure from the City Council, leaving Dallas as the largest Texas city without a chief executive.

Tension between Broadnax and Mayor Eric Johnson has been ongoing for years. Two years ago, Johnson led a failed public effort to fire Broadnax.

As city manager, Broadnax had a salary of $426,241 a year. City officials say they’ll appoint an interim manager while conducting a national search for a replacement.

Broadnax’s departure is one of three recent city manager departures in Texas. El Paso and Austin ousted their chief executives last year and are operating with interim city managers.

Article Icon 1Paxton Sues Nonprofit Over Migrants

Attorney General Ken Paxton filed a lawsuit to close the Catholic nonprofit Annunciation House in El Paso, accusing it of aiding illegal immigration and human smuggling.

Annunciation House has refuted the accusations, stating that its goal is to provide hospitality and support to refugees.

Court records show Paxton’s office demanded documentation for the people living at the shelter, a move criticized as unreasonable by Annunciation House’s lawyer.

The nonprofit has filed a lawsuit to delay the release of records and examine the legality of the Attorney General’s request. A press conference is scheduled for today.
