Article Icon 1 Trump and Biden Visit the Border

Donald Trump and President Biden came to the Texas border Thursday, with Biden touring Brownsville and Trump visiting Eagle Pass— ‘ground zero’ of the ongoing border crisis.

Both visits occurred against a backdrop of heightened immigration concerns, with record numbers of illegal immigrants flowing into the U.S.

Trump focused on holding the Biden administration responsible for the surge in illegal immigration and advocated for ‘America First’ policies.

In contrast, Biden’s visit centered on shifting blame to Republicans for deliberately blocking bipartisan border security legislation, which included aid to Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan.

Article Icon 1 Judge Temporarily Blocks Texas Law

A federal judge temporarily blocked a Texas law that would have empowered local police to arrest illegal immigrants, creating a legal conflict with federal immigration authority.

U.S. District Judge David Ezra said the law will likely be found unconstitutional, saying immigration enforcement is a federal prerogative. The law is currently on hold while the case works through the courts.

Texas appealed the decision to the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals, potentially leading to a review by the U.S. Supreme Court. Supporters lauded the court’s ruling, while critics demanded more accountability for people breaking the law.

Article Icon 1 John Cornyn Seeks to Replace McConnell

Texas Sen. John Cornyn declared his candidacy to lead the US Senate Republican Conference following Sen. Mitch McConnell’s decision to resign from the leadership post in November.

The leadership race will mainly involve private discussions among senators over the next few months, culminating in November’s elections. Cornyn served as McConnell’s No. 2 five years ago.

Cornyn was the first to throw his hat into the ring, but others are expected to join the race. Potential candidates include South Dakota Sen. John Thune and Wyoming Sen. John Barrasso.
