Article Icon 1New DFW Terminal Doubling in Size

Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport’s new Terminal F will double in size from 15 to 31 gates, according to a Thursday announcement by airport CEO Sean Donohue and American Airlines CEO Robert Isom. American is also extending its lease with the airport to 2043.

The original project’s price tag was $1.6 billion when it was announced in 2023, but that figure has increased to $4 billion with the expansion. American Airlines, which accounts for 82% of the airport’s traffic, will be the new terminal’s sole tenant.

DFW International Airport is also undergoing a $3 billion renovation of Terminal C, which will add more gates ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The Metroplex will host nine games during the competition.

Last year, 87.8 million passengers passed through DFW, making it the world’s third-busiest airport. By the end of the decade, the airport is projected to accommodate 100 million passengers annually.

Article Icon 1Legislative Update

Several high-profile bills advanced in either the Texas House or Senate this week. The current legislative session ends a month from today, although crucial deadlines are approaching quickly.

On Tuesday, the Senate unanimously passed legislation that clarifies medical exceptions to the state’s surgical abortion ban. Dubbed the “Life of the Mother Act,” Senate Bill 31 states that doctors can remove an ectopic pregnancy and the remains of a miscarriage.

On Wednesday, the Senate passed a bill that extends the private enforcement mechanism of the state’s abortion ban to manufacturers and distributors of abortion-inducing drugs. Approved along party lines, Senate Bill 2880 stipulates that it cannot be challenged in court before it goes into effect.

In the House, lawmakers approved legislation that prohibits children under 18 from having social media accounts and requires disclosures on political ads created using AI-generated imagery.

Article Icon 1Driverless Semis Hit Texas Roads

Aurora, a Pittsburgh-based self-driving freight company, launched its first driverless semi-truck on public roads in Texas this week. It operates on I-45 between Dallas and Houston for Uber Freight and Hirschbach Motor Lines.

The company transports over 100 loads a week using 30 supervised trucks. During a four-year pilot program, it logged 3 million miles over 10,000 hauls. By the end of the year, it aims to scale up to a few dozen autonomous trucks on the road.

Industry groups have expressed skepticism about the technology, citing concerns about “phantom braking,” insufficient testing, and limited transparency regarding safety records. Some studies show driverless semis could eliminate up to 500,000 jobs.

According to a survey conducted by Advocates for Highway & Auto Safety, 86% of U.S. drivers are worried about sharing the road with a driverless truck. However, proponents of the technology say it can improve safety, reduce delivery times, and help address driver shortages.
