Article Icon 1Roberson Execution Stayed

Next week’s scheduled execution of Robert Roberson, convicted of murdering his 2-year-old daughter Nikki in 2003, was stayed yesterday by the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals. It’s the third time his execution has been blocked.

The order cited a stay of execution in a similar case last October, when a new trial was ordered for a Dallas County man convicted of injuring a child on a diagnosis of shaken baby syndrome, which has come under intense scrutiny in recent years.

Roberson’s case was remanded to a district court in Anderson County for consideration of new evidence that could clear him of wrongdoing. Roberson and his legal team insist Nikki died from complications of chronic pneumonia and a fall from her bed.

State Rep. Jeff Leach (R-Plano), whose legislative committee orchestrated a last-minute stay of Roberson’s execution last year, praised the decision, saying “truth and justice finally win the day.” Others, including pediatricians at UT Austin and Yale School of Medicine, maintain that Roberson was responsible for Nikki’s death.

Article Icon 1Residents Aim to Regulate Crypto Mine

About 250 residents in Hood County will vote on whether to incorporate their rural community into the city of Mitchell Bend to address noise pollution from a nearby cryptocurrency mining facility.

Built in 2022, the MARA Holdings facility is one of four the company operates in Texas, which accounts for about 40% of the nation’s crypto mines.

The company built a sound barrier and replaced 67% of the fans used to cool its 60,000 computers, but residents claim the noise continues to disrupt their lives and even causes health problems.

Geraldine Lathers, 74, said she’s developed vertigo and hypertension in the past year. Despite misgivings, she plans to vote for incorporation: “I don’t want to really be a city, but what choices have you got?

In August, MARA successfully had a petition for incorporation invalidated by pointing out that some of the residents who signed it didn’t live within the proposed city limits. A second petition was approved by the county. “We’re getting really good at fighting Goliath,” said an organizer.

Twenty-one Texas hotels have been recognized as winners of this year’s Michelin Keys, an annual designation awarded to the world’s 2,457 top hotels by French tire company Michelin. Hotels can receive a 1-, 2-, or 3-Key rating.

No hotel in Texas received three Keys, but three received two Keys: Bowie House in Fort Worth, Commodore Perry Estate in Austin, and Hotel Emma in San Antonio. Receiving one Key were seven hotels in Austin, four in Dallas and Houston, and one each in Galveston, El Paso, and Fort Worth.

None of last year’s winners were removed from the list, but there was one addition: the newly opened Hotel Saint Augustine in Houston. See the full list of U.S. hotels that received Michelin Keys here.

More Than Seven Revenue Streams from One Business

Most companies chase one or two ways to make money. Surf Lakes has at least seven.

At the heart of it all is their patented 360° Wave Tech, which enables 2,000 surfable rides per hour for both beginners and pros. That single breakthrough unlocks multiple revenue streams: licensing fees, royalties, memberships, day passes, media, coaching, food, retail, and direct park operations.

Another key aspect of this technology is that it enables the development of up to half a mile of beachside property, adding exponential value to each project.

It’s why surfing legends Tom Curren and Mark “Occy” Occhilupo are proud and vocal ambassadors of Surf Lakes.

Actor Chris Hemsworth even said this after his Surf Lakes experience: “What an incredible setup! Really thankful I got to test this out… an awesome day.”

Surf tourism is a $65B global industry, yet fewer than 1% of people can access real waves. Surf Lakes makes it possible anywhere, turning cities into surf destinations.

They’ve already sold nine licenses worldwide, and the expansion is coming. Invest in Surf Lakes by Oct. 30 at 11:59 p.m. PT.
