A 35-year-old woman has been charged with attempted arson of an El Paso church that hosted a vigil for Charlie Kirk last week. The attack occurred the day before the gathering.

According to court documents, Marynka Zarina Marquez visited Beth El Bible Church shortly before noon last Wednesday, asking to leave a blue gift bag for the planned vigil.

When the pastor left the church soon after, he noticed a brown paper bag with a towel on fire outside the building. He was able to stomp it out. A witness reported seeing Marquez with the brown bag earlier.

When the witness searched the blue gift bag, she found a business card, a photograph, and a paper plate with crude messages about Kirk and the event organizers. Marquez was arrested last Friday and is in the county jail with a $50,000 bond.

The state of Texas is asking a federal court to dismiss a lawsuit initiated by student groups at UT Austin and UT Dallas. The lawsuit targets a new state law restricting “expressive activities” at public universities.

Passed in response to pro-Palestinian protests that rocked both institutions during the spring of 2024, Senate Bill 2972 requires Texas public universities to implement policies governing the “time, manner, and place” of campus protests, including a restriction on such activities between 10 p.m. and 8 a.m.

The lawsuit claims the statute violates students’ First Amendment rights and could be applied to activities like producing a newspaper or even posting on social media. Among the groups suing the UT System are the Texas Society of Unconventional Drummers, the Fellowship of Christian University Students, and Young Americans for Liberty.

The state argues that the plaintiffs have not been harmed by the law and insists the restrictions “do not impose a blanket ban on expressive activities,” nor do they “ban unobtrusive forms of communication with no potential for disruption.”
