Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick announced Friday he will run for a fourth term, touting an endorsement from President Donald Trump, who called him an “incredible friend.”
Patrick served two terms in the Texas Senate before he was elected its presiding officer in 2014, ousting former Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst in the Republican primary. During his tenure, Patrick has advocated for state-funded school choice, property tax reform, election integrity, and border security.
This session, he has focused on banning THC-infused products, which have proliferated in the state since a 2019 law legalized the sale of items containing less than 0.3% tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the psychoactive ingredient in marijuana.
Patrick has a 37% approval rating, while 32% of Texans disapprove, according to a February 2025 poll conducted by the University of Texas. Among Republicans, Patrick’s approval stands at 65%.
Border Park Reopened to Public
Shelby Park in Eagle Pass has reopened to the public after being locked down for over a year due to heightened border security measures.
The 47-acre park had been occupied by the Texas Military Department since early 2024, sparking a standoff with the Biden administration, whose Border Patrol was ordered to remove razor wire fencing installed by Texas National Guard troops.
In the year before the state’s seizure of Shelby Park, illegal border crossings averaged between 2,000 and 3,000 per day. By April of last year, that number had dropped to about five per day—and now it’s nearly zero.
Aggies Win on Double Grand Slams in Ninth
Texas A&M’s baseball team hit two grand slams in the ninth inning of Saturday’s home game against South Carolina. The 15–12 walk-off win marked the program’s biggest comeback victory since at least 1974.
The Aggies took an early 2-0 lead but fell behind 12-2 in the sixth inning. They had cut the lead to 12-7 going into the ninth, when Hayden Schott and Kaeden Kent hit grand slams to achieve the historic comeback.
Only 24 teams have ever hit two grand slams in the same inning, the last time being in 2018. The feat has happened just four times in the past 20 years.
The Aggies swept the three-game series against the Gamecocks and have now won six straight games after their season appeared all but over earlier this month.
