Article Icon 1Texas Sues New York Doctor Violating State’s Abortion Ban

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton filed a lawsuit Thursday against Dr. Margaret Daley Carpenter, a New York physician, for prescribing abortion-inducing drugs via telemedicine to a 20-year-old Collin County woman.

The lawsuit alleges that Carpenter prescribed mifepristone and misoprostol via telemedicine in violation of Texas law, facilitating the medical abortion of the woman’s nine-week pregnancy. Her partner reportedly learned about the pregnancy and abortion when he was asked to take the woman to the hospital for hemorrhaging.

Carpenter, who is not licensed in Texas, founded an advocacy group promoting telemedicine abortion nationwide. Paxton is seeking an injunction against her and up to $250,000 in civil penalties.

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul said in a Friday statement that she is committed to ensuring that her state remains a “safe harbor for all who seek abortion care.”

Article Icon 1Mystery Drones in Texas

After nearly a month of reports about mysterious drones being spotted over highly populated areas in the Mid-Atlantic region and across the country, residents near Houston have reported several drone sightings in the past week.

Cheryl Bowman in Crystal Beach told a local news outlet she saw about 20 drones flying in from the Gulf of Mexico toward the Galveston Ship Channel on Tuesday. Another resident photographed a group of drones flying near I-45 on Thursday night.

“They seem to be fairly big because we see them so far out in the Gulf as they fly toward us on the Peninsula,” Bowman said. Other residents expressed concern about the drones’ proximity to the Port of Houston, numerous refineries, and the Johnson Space Center.

Despite repeated calls for clarity from the public and elected officials, the FBI and Department of Homeland Security have said they have “no evidence at this time that the reported drone sightings pose a national security or a public safety threat, or have a foreign nexus.”

The city of McKinney has given preliminary approval for a 35-acre development featuring a 4-acre surf lagoon, a resort-style hotel, dining venues, and entertainment facilities.

The $200 million Cannon Beach Surf and Adventure Park will include attractions such as a rooftop pool, sandy beach, cliff diving, and a stationary surf wave. Construction is scheduled to begin next year.

The development is projected to create more than 700 jobs and generate $2 billion in economic impact over 20 years, attracting an estimated 300,000 visitors annually.

Although similar lagoon parks have been developed in the Houston area and in Waco, Cannon Beach will be the first in North Texas.
