Article Icon 1Deadly Tornado Devastates North Texas

At least seven people are dead and over 100 were injured after a tornado ripped through several North Texas counties Saturday evening.

The storm that produced the tornado was part of a larger system that swept through the middle of the country over the weekend, spawning more than 20 tornadoes and killing at least 15 in Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Kentucky.

The tornado destroyed over 200 homes, a marina on Lake Ray Roberts, and a gas station in Valley View where dozens had gathered to seek shelter.

Gov. Abbott surveyed the damage Sunday and issued a disaster declaration for Collin, Denton, Cooke, and Montague counties.

The Republican Party of Texas wrapped up its three-day convention over the weekend in San Antonio, where delegates chose a new chairman and approved rules to increase the party’s control over the selection of candidates.

Former Collin County Republican Party chairman Abraham George got the nod to replace outgoing chairman Matt Rinaldi to lead the party, beating out five other candidates with the help of an endorsement from Attorney General Ken Paxton.

Delegates also approved proposals to close party primaries and prohibit candidates who have been censured by the state party from running as Republicans.
