Dillard’s Exiting Mall Rumored for Stars Arena
The Shops at Willow Bend, a 1.4 million-square-foot mall in Plano, is losing Dillard’s, another anchor tenant, amid speculation that the site could become the home arena for the Dallas Stars. Neiman Marcus and Macy’s announced their departure earlier this year.
The last enclosed mall to be built in Texas, Willow Bend has struggled financially since it opened in 2001. After Centennial Real Estate acquired the property in 2022, it announced that the mall would be transformed into a walkable urban district featuring nearly 1,000 apartments, an office tower, and new retail spaces.
The new development, called The Bend, is a leading contender for a new $1 billion arena for the Dallas Stars, whose management is also reportedly weighing options in Frisco, The Colony, Arlington, and Fort Worth.
“We had been warned that there was something big possibly happening,” said Darrell Rodenbaugh, whose performing arts group uses the mall’s four-theater complex. “I think it’s great news for Plano.”
Permit Issued for Controversial Development
A coalition of lawmakers is raising questions about a wastewater discharge permit for a planned 2,900-home development in Bexar County that opponents say would contaminate the primary source of drinking water for San Antonio.
The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) approved a permit for Lennar’s 1,160-acre Guajolote Ranch development, which would discharge up to 1 million gallons of treated wastewater a day into the Helotes Creek watershed.
A 2020 study demonstrated such discharge could threaten the Edwards Aquifer, which provides drinking water for 2.5 million residents. State Sen. Donna Campbell (R-Bulverde), whose district includes the planned development, wrote a letter to TCEQ urging them to reconsider their decision.
Three other state senators, all 10 state representatives for Bexar County, and at least two San Antonio council members have also raised concerns about the development.
The TCEQ has not yet responded to Campbell’s letter, but a representative for Lennar defended the project, stating that 17 other wastewater treatment facilities already discharge wastewater into the affected zone.
Legendary Ranch Listed for $9.9M
A 1,266-acre Hill Country ranch rumored to contain buried treasure has been listed for $9.99 million.
Bullhead Mountain Ranch, located near Vance, was once a campsite for Spanish soldiers traveling through the region. According to legend, gold coins were buried somewhere on the property centuries ago.
With rolling hills, a spring-fed creek, and limestone bluffs, the ranch has two main residences as well as a foreman’s house, guest quarters, barns, and working pens. The ranch is also a potential hunting destination, with abundant deer, turkey, and wild hogs.
The allure of hidden treasure provides the ranch with “an undeniable sense of history and mystery,” according to the listing.
