Triple-Digit Heat Holds through Midweek

Texas is set to start the workweek back under heat advisories, with Monday highs near or above 100 degrees and humidity pushing feels-like readings as high as 110 across much of the eastern half of the state.

A dome of high pressure has North Texas locked in for at least another 72 hours. Morning lows at DFW airport will hover near 80, and south-southwest winds of 10 to 20 mph will act more like a blow dryer than relief.

Along the Gulf Coast, sea breezes and afternoon heating are projected to keep firing spotty storms that die off by sunset. Some neighborhoods should pick up a quick downpour while others stay dry. Feels-like numbers are expected to climb toward 110.

Relief is expected late in the week, when the heat dome should shift east, and highs settle back into the upper 90s. Austin has already logged 44 triple-digit days this year, including 39 of the 43 days since Aug. 1.

Family Sues Fort Worth Daycare

A Fort Worth couple is suing their son’s daycare, alleging a teacher grabbed, shook, and dragged a 4-year-old before slamming him onto a hardwood floor.

Heather and Richard Harris filed suit Sept. 4 in Tarrant County against Arka Montessori Academy of Risinger. They claim teacher Chynia Johnson steered the boy back toward her own son, who had been scuffling with him, while a second teacher stood by.

“This place looked like a child fight club. It felt like one,” family attorney Russell Button said of the surveillance video. The suit says the boy suffered bruises, scratches, and headaches, and has since stopped attending the daycare.

State regulators cited the center for improper discipline and prohibited punishment after the April 27 incident. Records show 21 deficiencies since January 2024, though an Aug. 20 inspection found none. The daycare declined to comment.

Cowboys, Texans Fall in Season Openers

Both of the Lone Star State’s NFL teams fell in one-possession season openers, with the Houston Texans losing to the Buffalo Bills and the Dallas Cowboys dropping an NFC East rivalry game to the New York Giants.

Dallas never led in the Sunday Night Football matchup and managed only two second-half possessions as New York consumed more than eight minutes on each of its two second-half touchdown drives.

Dak Prescott’s 17-yard touchdown pass to Javonte Williams pulled the Cowboys within eight points in the fourth quarter, but the Giants drained the final 5:21 with a 12-play drive to seal a 28-20 victory.

C.J. Stroud threw for 274 yards and two touchdowns for Houston, but Buffalo marched 96 yards for the winning touchdown with 1:36 remaining, handing the Texans a 36-31 loss.

➤ Pflugerville: A lightning strike torched the Thomas family’s attic in the Blackhawk neighborhood, resulting in a total loss. It’s the second home they’ve lost in five years after a flood destroyed their Houston house. Neighbors rallied with donations and a rental home. (Read Story)
