$100M Sought in Texans Ownership Dispute
Robert Cary McNair Jr., the son of Houston Texans co-founders Janice McNair and the late Robert McNair, is suing the NFL for conspiring to push him out of his family’s business in a “deliberate effort to silence him” after he questioned the league’s handling of former quarterback Deshaun Watson’s conduct.
Represented by prominent Houston attorney Tony Buzbee, McNair is seeking $100 million from the league for “alleged tortious interference with contract” by orchestrating his removal as CEO of his family’s business so that he could “exercise no influence over NFL-related matters.”
When Watson was accused of sexually assaulting more than two dozen women in 2021, McNair criticized hasty settlements of 22 civil lawsuits “without any investigation,” and he “began asking pointed questions about NFL player scandals that potentially implicated the NFL.”
Robert McNair Sr. sold his power company, Cogen Technologies, to Enron for $1.5 billion in 1999. The same year, he founded the Texans with a $600 million bid.
Texas Woman Arrested in Sex Trafficking Scheme
A 45-year-old Southlake woman has been arrested for allegedly trafficking women for retired New York financier Howard Rubin, who is accused of assaulting them at his penthouse.
According to court documents, Jennifer Powers recruited women through social media for sexual encounters with Rubin, who would subject them to “physical and sexual violence” in a locked and soundproofed room.
“This was not a one-man show,” said IRS agent Harry Chavis Jr. Between 2009 and 2019, Powers allegedly paid over $1 million to dozens of women who were forced to sign non-disclosure agreements.
Rubin is also accused of bank fraud in financing the mortgage for Powers’ home. Powers is expected to appear in court in Texas today before she is arraigned in New York. Prosecutors have requested a “substantial bail package” for her.
Bicentennial Trail Receives State Backing
An initiative to build a 100-mile hike and bike trail from San Antonio to Austin has received the backing of state lawmakers. This year, they approved legislation to ensure the completion of the Bicentennial Trail by 2036.
The route, from the Alamo to the Texas Capitol, aims to preserve 50,000 acres in the Edwards Aquifer recharge zone, which includes the San Antonio Springs, Comal Springs, San Marcos Springs, and Barton Springs. Some sections of the trail have already been built.
House Bill 4230 directs the General Land Office to coordinate the acquisition and development of property for the trail, but it prohibits the use of eminent domain. The measure did not allocate any immediate funding for the project.
“This sprawling network of nature trails, renowned geographical locations, and historical landmarks will inspire Texans and millions of annual visitors to explore our state’s unique beauty and history, boosting our robust economy,” said Texas Land Commissioner Dawn Buckingham.
