Good morning! On this day in 1856, the Houston Academy was established with support from civic leaders. The school, housed in a two-story brick building, accommodated 400 students and offered separate classrooms for boys and girls, teaching various academic subjects along with fencing, painting, and gymnastics.

 Ross Fire Second-Largest in North Texas
The Ross Fire in Palo Pinto and Jack counties has burned more than 85,000 acres and was 26% contained Friday morning, per the Texas A&M Forest Service. The blaze started Monday, almost 100 miles west of Dallas.
Hundreds of firefighters and volunteers are battling what is now the second-largest wildfire in North Texas history, roughly five times the size of DFW International Airport. The cause remains under investigation, and officials have set no containment timeline.
Crews are trying to hold the fire east of Highway 16, near Possum Kingdom Lake, where a 2011 wildfire destroyed 166 homes. Five structures were lost, and a 97-year-old Scout camp reported catastrophic damage. “We are still in the midst of putting this fire out,” spokeswoman Amy Meyer said.

Trump Honors Artemis II Crew in Houston
President Trump awarded the Congressional Space Medal of Honor to the four Artemis II astronauts on Friday at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston, then became the first president to call astronauts aboard the International Space Station from Mission Control.
NASA’s Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, and Christina Koch, and Canadian astronaut Jeremy Hansen completed a 10-day mission around the moon in April, the first crewed lunar voyage in more than 50 years.
During the ceremony, Trump signed an executive order creating a U.S. Space Academy, a new military academy that will also train civilians for NASA and commercial spaceflight. He said the nation must “educate and train an entire generation” of service members and engineers. The academy’s location has yet to be determined.

Zebras Trot Back into Fort Worth Zoo
The Fort Worth Zoo announced Friday that two juvenile zebras from a private Texas wildlife ranch are now exploring their habitat, becoming the zoo’s first since 2021.
Hercules and Pegasus, half-brothers whose names film fans will recognize from Disney’s 1997 Hercules, arrived about a month ago.
The first zebra came in 1923, and the species stayed nearly a century before leaving to make way for the lion habitat in Predators of Asia and Africa. The zoo built a new barn and converted a former rhino space to house the pair between its hippos and flamingos.
“After their departure in 2021, we realized just how much our guests missed their presence in the park,” executive director Michael Fouraker said.
