Article Icon 1House Passes Land Sale Ban on China, Others

The Texas House passed a bill Friday that would prohibit the sale of Texas “real property” to entities from China, Russia, Iran, and North Korea, all of which are considered national security threats by the federal government.

The bill, known as Senate Bill 17, would also give authority to Gov. Greg Abbott to add other nations to the ban.

Opponents argue it could prevent lawful residents who pose no national security risk from buying property..

The bill now returns to the Senate to consider changes made in the House approval process. If passed, it would go into effect Sept. 1 and only apply to transactions after that date.

The owner of a 200-year-old Rio Grande ranch has won a legal battle that prevented the expansion of Hwy. 83 through his property.

After receiving bipartisan support, rancher Rene Ramirez successfully lobbied for TxDOT to reroute the expansion east of the ranch, avoiding the property.

Legislators have seized on the fight over the historic ranch to introduce bills that would change the way TxDOT interacts with landowners impacted by proposed new roads or expansions, requiring greater transparency and direct contact with the owners.

Perhaps the most attention-grabbing guest was Jessie Murph’s pig, whom she brought along for the red carpet event.
