Article Icon 1“Pop” Steps Down

San Antonio Spurs coach Gregg Popovich announced Friday he is stepping down after 29 years and will stay with organization as the team president.

Popovich, a Hall of Famer, suffered a stroke in early November, causing him to step aside from his coaching duties.

Affectionately known as “Pop,” Popovich has amassed an extraordinary resume in his time with the Spurs, securing the most regular-season wins in league history, winning five NBA titles, and adding an Olympic gold medal in 2020.

The Spurs officially named Mitch Johnson, acting head coach since Popovich’s stroke, as the new head coach after the announcement.

The Defense Department announced Thursday it will establish a second military zone along the Mexican border, based in Texas and attached to Fort Bliss.

Personnel in the new military zone are authorized to detain people for illegally crossing the border from Mexico.

The first military zone, set up in New Mexico, has already detained illegal immigrants, charging more than two dozen this week with trespassing into a national defense area.

The zone in Texas stretches approximately 53 miles, considerably less than the 170-mile strip in New Mexico.
