Good morning! On this day in 1835, after the Battle of Gonzales, which marked the beginning of the Texas Revolution, Stephen F. Austin arrived in Gonzales with approximately 300 volunteer soldiers. The newly organized Texian forces then prepared to advance toward San Antonio de Béxar.
Traditions run deep in Texas, especially in Austin, where one high school group has been kicking up school spirit for a century. Meet the Austin High Red Jackets in today’s Top Stories. Were you or a family member part of the Red Jackets? Drop us a line and share your memories. We’d love to hear about your part in Texas history.
Is the government really about to hand you $1,000 a year for retirement? The IRS has started mailing notices to millions of Americans about a new program that deposits federal matching money directly into retirement accounts, rather than just shave it off your tax bill. But there’s a catch. Plenty of savers will get the full $1,000, while others won’t see a dime, and the difference comes down to a few details on your tax return. So who qualifies, and how do you actually claim the money? Amy has the full story on today’s episode of The Flyover Podcast. Tune in here!
Today’s sponsor, Omni Barton Creek Resort & Spa, is bringing holiday magic to the Texas Hill Country with festive family experiences, seasonal dining, championship golf, spa relaxation, and savings of up to 20% on holiday stays.

Neighbors Cry Foul over $1.7B Solar Farm
Robertson County neighbors say they were blindsided by a $1.7 billion solar project going up near Bremond.
The nearly 10,000-acre project will place 2 million panels beside the Twin Oaks power station, where the coal plant keeps running. One couple says potential buyers have backed out on their home, and another neighbor’s front door will sit about 150 feet from the panels.
The county’s 10-year, 100% tax break includes no protections for those neighbors. It brings in $13 million to $19 million, short of the $25 million to $30 million officials estimate regular taxes would bring, and requires just four full-time jobs.
The developer is also eyeing a possible data center on site.

Red Jackets Dance into a Second Century
Hundreds of former Austin High Red Jackets danced before kickoff at a recent home game to celebrate the group’s 100th year.
The Red Jackets formed as a girls’ service club in the late 1920s, soon after Austin High moved to its Rio Grande Street campus. The club was modeled on the University of Texas’ Orange Jackets, one alum recalled.
The school moved to its lakeside campus in 1975. Over the decades, the Red Jackets went from marching with the band to competing as an elite dance team that performs year-round.
The milestone also brought a ribbon-cutting for a dance studio named for Stephanie Braden Wright, the team’s director for the past 25 years.

Texas Eyes Red River Three-Peat
Unbeaten No. 1 Texas puts its perfect record on the line against Oklahoma today in Dallas, where the Longhorns march into the Cotton Bowl as 7.5-point favorites for the 2:30 p.m. kickoff on ABC.
The Longhorns have never lost this game as the nation’s No. 1 team, going 4-0-1 in those matchups. Oklahoma owns the rivalry’s only two losses by a top-ranked team, falling in 1963 and 2008.
Texas leads the series 65-51-5 and can string together three straight Red River wins for the first time since 1997-99.
The Longhorns’ No. 1 defense faces an Oklahoma offense that ranks 69th in efficiency and hasn’t scored a touchdown against Texas since 2023.
The rivalry unfolds amid the 24-day State Fair of Texas, where fans in crimson and burnt orange can grab a Fletcher’s Corny Dog and tailgate near a Ferris wheel and auto show. You can read a guide for first-time fairgoers here.
