Article Icon 1Progressive Halts New Insurance Policies

Progressive Insurance has announced an indefinite hold on new home insurance policies in Texas, citing weather-related losses.

Forty percent of the company’s second-quarter losses came from Texas claims, according to an internal report

Reducing the impact from weather-related volatility is strategically important,” CEO Tricia Griffith said in a statement. “We continue to focus on growing in states where weather risk is relatively lower.”

Texas isn’t the only state to lose access to Progressive; five Midwestern states will no longer be offered new policies, and 115,000 Florida policyholders lost insurance last year.

Progressive has not indicated that current Texas policyholders are at risk of losing their coverage.
