Article Icon 1Lottery Dispute Ends in Settlement

The Texas Lottery Commission agreed to pay a woman $45.89 million to settle a lawsuit over its denial of her $83.5 million jackpot payout.

Kristen Moriarty, who picked all six numbers for an $83.5 million jackpot, was denied her winnings after Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick visited the store where she bought the ticket.

Lottery officials subsequently refused to provide Moriarty her winnings, citing the pending investigation, which prompted Moriarty to sue the Commission’s Executive Director.

Moriarty was awarded $45.89 million on Wednesday, two days before the scheduled hearing in court. You can find the full settlement here.

Article Icon 1Firefighting Goes Autonomous

Texas could be the first state to see fully autonomous Black Hawk helicopters, thanks to research by Texas A&M University and the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency.

With $60 million in funding, the partnership’s goal is to convert traditional UH-60 Blackhawks into AI-powered aircrafts that can fight fires without a pilot. The choppers will be able to carry out water drops, supply deliveries, and aerial surveillance in places too risky for human crews.

The helicopters will be developed and tested over the next two years and will involve several emergency response teams from across the state. Read the full story here.

Article Icon 1Miracle Baby Goes Home

A baby born at 22 weeks and five days in Houston defied the odds, graduating from the neonatal intensive care unit and heading home healthy with her parents.

Ada Bishop, who was born at The Woman’s Hospital of Texas and was later transferred to Texas Children’s Hospital, was born at just 1 pound, 4 ounces. She was transferred to the NICU to receive specialized care after birth, including a tracheostomy.

The intensive care allowed Bishop to develop healthily over the course of nearly a year, until her release. You can see a video of her special graduation ceremony here.
