Article Icon 1McKinney National Readies First Flights

McKinney National Airport’s first commercial flight departs on Wednesday for Fort Myers, Florida, one of 11 destinations served by Avelo Airlines, the airport’s only carrier for now.

The airline unveiled five routes in June, all to Las Vegas and Florida, then added four more, including New Orleans and Nashville, with service starting in December.

For Collin County travelers, the airport offers a closer option than DFW Airport or Love Field. The terminal opens with four gates but is built for six, and Airport Director Ken Carley said leaders will gauge demand and work with Avelo to add routes.

Article Icon 1South Texas Braces for Flash Flooding

Gov. Greg Abbott mobilized state rescue teams as rounds of storms threaten flash flooding across South and West Texas through early this week.

Available crews include Texas A&M swiftwater boat squads, game wardens with hoist-equipped helicopters, state troopers, and medical teams with ambulances.

Parts of deep South Texas could see 4 to 6 inches of rain through Monday, with the Rio Grande Valley facing the greatest flash flood risk, according to the National Weather Service.

Coastal Bend neighborhoods could pick up 2 to 3 inches of rain by today, with minor coastal flooding possible at high tide.

Abbott urged Texans to watch local forecasts and stay off flooded roads.

Article Icon 1Kilgore Giveaway Triples Its Ham Supply

Credit Union of Texas handed out 300 turkeys and 300 hams in Kilgore on Saturday, tripling the ham supply from its first giveaway.

The giveaway debuted at the branch’s opening last year, when the credit union passed out 300 turkeys and 100 hams. This year, it added 200 hams to help meet local needs.

Local food shelters and nonprofits helped run the drive-through event, and people waiting in line said it took some pressure off rising costs. The credit union hopes to keep the giveaway going each year and stock more next time.
