Education Board Finalizes Social Studies Rewrite

The State Board of Education gave final approval Friday to high school social studies standards requiring students to learn that the Sept. 11 attacks were motivated by “radical Islam”.

That wording replaces a narrower focus on the terrorist groups behind the attacks. Lessons also present the Prophet Muhammad as a warrior who spread the faith through violence and slavery.

The Republican majority approved each section after testimony that ran mostly against it. Member Julie Pickren, who backed the changes, said the vote “bookends 12 years of life’s work.”

Muslim speakers had asked members to restore a deleted standard on Muslim contributions to algebra and astronomy. The advocacy group CAIR says it will work to overturn the standards, which reach classrooms in 2030.

Texas Democrats Counter GOP Convention

Texas Democrats will open a media center in Dallas next week to offer commentary and interviews during the Republican National Committee’s midterm convention.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries is sending four members of his caucus to work alongside state and local Democrats. They plan to press Republicans on the cost of living.

More than a dozen organizations are planning rallies downtown. Kardal Coleman, who chairs the Dallas County Democrats, said fundraisers and demonstrations are in the works.

National Democrats weighed holding a midterm convention of their own and decided against it. The RNC says its two-day gathering at American Airlines Center, which President Trump closes Thursday, will highlight the party’s record and candidates ahead of November.

Metros Top Texas Income Rankings

A Tarrant County suburb of about 31,500 people holds the highest median household income of any ZIP code in Texas.

Southlake’s 76092 sits at the Census Bureau’s reporting ceiling of $250,000 or more, a cap the bureau uses to protect privacy. The median Texas household earns $78,476, so the top-ranked ZIP codes bring in over double that.

By average household income, the state’s wealthiest ZIP is downtown Houston’s 77010 at $404,356, followed by Southlake at $383,015. University Park’s 75225 ranks next at $356,169, then West University Place at $353,045 and Bellaire at $335,320.

The median and average income rankings cluster in the state’s biggest metros, with representation from Houston, Dallas-Fort Worth, and Austin.
