The Roundup

Article Icon 1Equine Virus Spreading Fast

Multiple veterinary clinics across Texas have reported cases of Equine Herpesvirus Type 1 (EHV-1) linked to the World Championship Barrel Racing Finals in the Waco area from November 5 to 9. According to the Outlaw Equine Hospital and Rehab Center in Decatur, the outbreak is “highly aggressive and has been fatal.”

Yesterday, Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller urged horse owners to be vigilant for symptoms of the disease, which include nasal discharge, coughing, fever, lethargy, and neurological impairment. Infected horses should be quarantined, and those potentially exposed to the virus should not travel to any events until further notice.

The outbreak has led to cancellation of the Uvalde Rodeo Qualifier this week and all events at the Texas Rose Horse Park in Tyler until next month. “This is not just about protecting our facility—it’s about safeguarding the larger Texas equine community,” the park said in a statement.

This virus can spread fast, it can be deadly, and the earliest signs are often so subtle they’re easy to miss,” said Miller. “If we work together and take this seriously, we can get ahead of this outbreak and keep our horses and our state’s $12.3 billion equine industry safe.”

Article Icon 1River Walk Boat Passengers Pepper Sprayed

An unidentified woman pepper-sprayed eight people during a San Antonio River Walk boat ride last weekend after she was confronted about her phone’s volume, according to witnesses.

In a viral TikTok video, the woman is seen yelling as she gets off the boat while another passenger calls her “trash” and says she’s going to be “TikTok famous.” Another video recorded moments later shows several passengers—including a young child—wincing in pain after apparently getting pepper-sprayed.

According to a police report, the boat operator had asked the woman to get off because her phone’s volume was interfering with other passengers’ ability to hear the tour script. As of Wednesday evening, officers were still looking for the woman.

You don’t really expect anything like that to happen,” said an employee of a nearby gift shop. “I hope they catch her because that’s so messed up.”

Article Icon 1Magnussen’s Mattress Mack Movie

Houston furniture salesman Jim “Mattress Mack” McIngvale is the subject of an upcoming biopic produced by actor Billy Magnussen and directed by Houston native Shane Andries. Filming is set to begin this month.

McIngvale, 74, opened Gallery Furniture in the 1980s and became a local icon with his famous “Save You Money” TV commercials. Beloved for his philanthropy and enthusiasm for the Astros, McIngvale has also made headlines for his eye-popping bets and support for Republican politicians.

Magnussen will star as McIngvale alongside Dianna Agron, Darby Lee-Stack, and Rob Corddry. The film will depict the challenges McIngvale experienced launching his business and the mental health struggles of his daughter Elizabeth, who became a spokesperson for the International OCD Foundation after receiving treatment for the disorder.

Jim McIngvale’s story is one of resilience, heart, and community,” Magnussen said in a statement. “I’m honored to help bring his incredible journey to the screen and to collaborate with such passionate storytellers in capturing the spirit of Mattress Mack and the city of Houston.”
