Article Icon 1Abilene University To Get Nuclear Reactor

Abilene Christian University has received federal approval to build a small nuclear research reactor, the first of its kind approved in over 40 years.

The reactor, developed in partnership with Abilene-based Natura Resources, will test molten-salt cooling technology for use in larger-scale reactors.

The University of Texas at Austin and Texas A&M University also have on-campus nuclear reactors.

Last year, Gov. Greg Abbott established a task force within the Public Utility Commission to examine the feasibility of nuclear power to supply the state’s growing energy needs.

Article Icon 1Travis County Sues Paxton

Travis County sued Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton and Secretary of State Jane Nelson, accusing them of violating the National Voter Registration Act by trying to prevent the county from mailing unsolicited voter registration applications to unregistered voters.

Paxton claimed the program could cause ineligible voters to be added to the state rolls, while county officials say they’re obligated to encourage voter participation under federal and state laws.

Earlier this month, Paxton sued to block taxpayer-funded initiatives to register voters in Travis and Bexar counties.

On Monday, a judge denied Paxton’s request for a restraining order against Bexar County because the voter registration applications had already been mailed.

Article Icon 1Study: Texans’ Car-Cleaning Habits

Over 15% of Texas car owners—around 3.2 million people—rarely deep clean their cars, according to a study by Panda Hub, a website that lets users schedule car wash and detailing services.

The study claims that car seats can carry high levels of bacteria and are a prime vector in spreading sickness.

The survey of 400 Texas car owners also found that 46% of drivers regularly eat or drink in their car, and over 55% have performed a sexual act in a car at some point.
