Question: What is the only county in Texas where the state’s official gemstone has been found?

Answer: Mason County is the only Texas county where there have been documented discoveries of blue topaz, the state’s official gemstone. Topaz can be found in a variety of colors, including yellow, pink, and brown. In 1904, Albert McGehee discovered a 6,480-carat blue topaz crystal in Mason County, and it remains the largest discovered in North America. The Texas Legislature designated the blue topaz the state’s official gemstone in 1969. Three ranches in Mason County offer public topaz hunting.
